1. Germany Continues to Lead Europe's Residential Market

Germany continues to lead Europe's residential solar and energy storage market through steady policy improvements.


The latest VDE 4105 (2026) standard makes balcony energy storage systems easier to install. Systems below 7 kW now have a simpler registration process, while the maximum PV input has been increased. This allows homeowners to connect more solar panels and store more solar energy.


At the same time, the standard keeps the maximum grid feed-in power at 800 W, balancing grid safety with consumer benefits.


Another important change is stronger protection for tenants. Landlords and property managers can no longer unreasonably refuse the installation of balcony solar and storage systems.


This matters because more than half of Germany's population lives in rented homes. By removing a major barrier for tenants, the new rules open the market to millions of potential users.


The market is already growing rapidly.

By the end of 2025, more than 1.2 million balcony PV systems had been officially registered in Germany. In the first quarter of 2026, new grid-connected installations increased by 140% year over year.


Industry estimates suggest the real number of installed systems, including those that are not registered, has already reached 3–4 million.


Looking ahead, Germany aims to reach 7 GW of total balcony PV capacity by 2030, equal to around 5 million installed systems. This shows that the market still has strong growth potential and will continue to drive demand for residential solar and battery storage.


2. €1.5 Billion to Accelerate Battery Manufacturing

Support for energy storage is not limited to Germany. The European Union is also investing heavily to strengthen the industry's supply chain.


The EU has launched its Battery Booster initiative, providing €1.5 billion in interest-free loans in the first phase. The program focuses on expanding battery cell production in Europe, with small-scale energy storage batteries listed as one of its key priorities.


The funding comes from the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and is aimed at battery manufacturers that are expanding production. Companies must plan an annual production capacity of at least 10 GWh, and each eligible company can receive up to €500 million in financing.


The investment is driven by a clear challenge: Europe's battery production is not growing fast enough to meet rising demand.


Over the past few years, Europe's battery manufacturing capacity has expanded much more slowly than that of China and the United States, while demand for energy storage has continued to rise.


According to industry projections, Europe will need to add around 29 GW of new energy storage capacity every year between 2026 and 2028. By comparison, only 12 GW was added across Europe in 2025.


To meet its clean energy goals, Europe must more than double its annual energy storage installations over the next three years. Increasing battery manufacturing capacity will be essential to closing this gap and supporting the continued growth of residential and commercial energy storage.
